Origin and Description:
Hoya verticillata (acuta red/spoon leaf) is a striking and unique variant of Hoya verticillata, often recognized for its spoon-shaped, rigid leaves that taper to a sharp point. The leaves are typically longer than those of other Hoya varieties, and under strong light, they develop a reddish hue, enhancing their visual appeal. This variant also produces spicy-scented, star-shaped flowers that are typical of the species. These blooms add an additional layer of charm, making it a beautiful addition to any plant collection.

Natural Habitat:
Like other Hoya verticillata varieties, the acuta red/spoon leaf variant is native to tropical rainforests in Southeast Asia. It thrives in warm, humid environments as an epiphyte, where it clings to trees and receives dappled sunlight.

Care Instructions:

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light to help bring out the reddish hues in its leaves. Some exposure to sunlight can encourage more vibrant coloration, but avoid harsh, direct light that may scorch the leaves.
  • Watering: Allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so ensure the potting mix drains well.
  • Humidity: This plant thrives in a humid environment, ideally with humidity levels above 60%.
  • Temperature: Keep it in temperatures between 65-85°F (18-29°C), avoiding cold drafts.
  • Soil: A well-draining mix, such as orchid bark, perlite, and coco husk, is ideal for replicating its natural epiphytic conditions.

Fun Fact:
The "spoon leaf" name refers to the unique shape of the leaves, which are longer, more rigid, and tapered compared to other Hoya varieties. Under bright light, the leaves take on a stunning red tint, adding to the plant’s dynamic appearance

Care Needs

Bright diffused light

Recreate conditions under a tree canopy, where plants receive lots of light, but it is filtered through the foliage of the trees above. Your light should be bright enough to cast soft shadows.

Low Humidity: Ideally Above 40%

This Hoya tolerates a drier environment. However, it could still benefit from light humidity care, including misting and grouping together with other houseplants. May require humidifier in cooler, drier months.

Intermediate: Lowest 60F

This hoya does not require high heat, but does not tolerate cold as well as other varieties.

Does Sunstress

This plant has evolved to shift color when exposed to bright sunlight, much like a human getting a tan. This does not harm the plant with proper care.
