Origin and Description

Hoya ‘Nong Nooch’, also referred to as Hoya sp. Nong Nooch, is an uncommon and highly desirable species with uncertain taxonomy. It is believed to share affinities with species such as Hoya finlaysonii or Hoya callistophylla.

The plant is especially valued for its foliage. Mature leaves are broad, prominently veined, and often undulate along the margins, creating a striking architectural form. Under favorable conditions, leaves may reach up to 17 cm long and 7.5 cm wide. When exposed to brighter light, the venation and edges may develop subtle sun-stressed tones, further enhancing its ornamental appeal.

Inflorescences produce clusters of cream to yellow flowers with burgundy tips, each approximately 8 mm in diameter. A single umbel may bear up to 20–22 flowers. While delicate, the blooms provide a refined contrast to the plant’s bold foliage.

Natural Habitat

Although its precise origin has not been confirmed, the name “Nong Nooch” likely references the Nong Nooch Tropical Botanical Garden in Thailand, where this plant form may have been collected or introduced. As with many Hoyas, it is believed to be epiphytic, naturally inhabiting tropical forests with filtered light, warm temperatures, and high humidity.

Care Guidelines

  • Light:
Prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight, which can damage the foliage.
  • Watering:
Allow the top portion of the growing medium to dry between waterings. Ensure the potting mix provides excellent drainage to prevent waterlogging.
  • Humidity:
Performs best in environments with 60 % relative humidity or higher. Supplemental humidity is beneficial in drier conditions.
  • Temperature:
Maintain temperatures between 18–29 °C. Protect from exposure below 13 °C.
  • Soil / Medium:
Use a chunky, well-aerated medium. A mix incorporating coco husk, orchid bark, perlite, or sphagnum moss provides the drainage and airflow Hoyas prefer.
  • Fertilization:
During the active growing season, feed with a balanced fertilizer at half strength to support vigorous growth and flowering.
