Disclaimer:
These plants are currently trellised on an 18-inch (≈ 46 cm) bamboo ladder trellis. Please note that occasional minor leaf blemishes or imperfections may appear due to environmental stress. These are purely cosmetic, not fungal, and do not compromise the plant’s health or vigor.
Origin & Description
Hoya meredithii was formally described in 1988 by T. Green. It is native to lowland tropical rainforests in Sarawak, East Malaysia, often found on limestone substrates and at low elevations.
This species is prized for its fleshy, waxy foliage with distinctive venation patterns. Mature leaves are succulent in texture, often with bold “webbing” or reticulate venation that gives the plant a dramatic, architectural presence.
Flowers are held in umbels and are fragrant. In cultivation, they are reported to emit a jasmine-like scent during much of the day, becoming stronger between late night and early morning. Blooming occurs in April through June in some settings.
Natural Habitat
In the wild, H. meredithii grows epiphytically or lithophytically in tropical lowland forests, often on limestone. It thrives in humid, warm environments with filtered light—conditions typical of understory forest zones.
Care Guidelines
-
Light:
Bright, indirect light is ideal. Avoid prolonged direct sun, which can scorch leaves. A light intensity around 50–60 % is often cited as suitable. -
Watering:
Allow the growing medium to become nearly dry before rewatering. Because its leaves are succulent and waxy, it can tolerate short dry spells, but consistent overwatering should be avoided. -
Humidity:
High humidity is preferred. Some growers report that H. meredithii is sensitive and performs better when humidity is elevated. -
Temperature:
Optimal range is around 20–25 °C. Lower temperatures (below ~13–15 °C) should be avoided. -
Soil / Medium:
Use a very well-draining, airy mix. A blend of bark, perlite, coco husk, or sphagnum works well to allow airflow to the roots. -
Fertilization:
During the active growing season, apply a balanced fertilizer at half strength, perhaps monthly.
