Trellised Hoya erythrostemma (silver)

Origin & Description

Hoya erythrostemma is a climbing species in the Hoya genus (described by Kerr).  Its natural range spans Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Malaysia, Borneo, Java, and Sumatra. 

The “Silver” form emphasizes attractive foliage. Leaves are elliptic, somewhat thick and glossy, with distinct venation and hints of silver tones or sheen under favorable lighting.  Leaf dimensions are typically about 8–9 cm long and 2.5–3 cm wide. 

Flower clusters are held upright in umbels (inflorescences) of 28 to 34 flowers.  The blossoms have a white to pale-pink corolla (~10 mm diameter) and a contrasting, often reddish, corona.  The inner surfaces are densely hairy, giving a fuzzy or crystallized appearance.  The floral scent is generally mild. 

Natural Habitat

In its native environments, H. erythrostemma grows as a woody vine—often epiphytic or climbing on trees in forest understories.  It prefers filtered light, moderate humidity, and consistent warmth.

Care Guidelines

• Light:
  Bright, indirect light is ideal. Avoid direct afternoon sun, which can scorch the foliage.  
• Watering:
  Water when the substrate is dry to the touch. Ensure good drainage to prevent waterlogging.
• Humidity:
  Prefers moderate to high humidity (around 40–60 % or more) for best performance.  
• Temperature:
  Maintain conditions between ~18–28 °C. Avoid prolonged exposure to cooler temperatures.
• Soil / Medium:
  Use a well-aerated, chunky mix—components like bark, perlite, or similar coarse material work well.
• Fertilization:
  Feed with a balanced, diluted fertilizer during the growing season to support foliage and flowering.
