Hoya verticillata (outer variegated)

Hoya verticillata (outer variegated)

Origin and Description:
Hoya verticillata (outer variegated) is a stunning and uncommon form of Hoya verticillata. This variety is known for its distinctive variegation along the outer edges of its thick, waxy leaves. The leaves feature a rich green center framed by creamy or white outer margins, creating a striking contrast. In bright light, new leaves may even emerge with a hint of pink before maturing to their full variegated beauty. Like other Hoyas, it produces clusters of small, star-shaped flowers, typically white or cream-colored with a delicate fragrance, adding to its ornamental appeal.

Natural Habitat:
This form of Hoya verticillata is native to Southeast Asia, where it grows as an epiphyte in humid, tropical rainforests. In its natural habitat, it clings to trees and thrives in dappled sunlight with plenty of moisture.

Care Instructions:

  • Light: This Hoya thrives in bright, indirect light, which helps maintain its vibrant variegation. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, as it can cause leaf burn.
  • Watering: Allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so ensure proper drainage.
  • Humidity: Like many tropical plants, Hoya verticillata (outer variegated) enjoys high humidity, ideally above 60%.
  • Temperature: This plant prefers temperatures between 65-85°F (18-29°C) and should be kept away from cold drafts.
  • Soil: A well-draining mix, such as orchid bark, perlite, and coco husk, is perfect for mimicking its natural epiphytic environment.

Fun Fact:
While often confused with Hoya acuta due to similarities, Hoya verticillata (outer variegated) is celebrated for its unique and vibrant variegation. This variety is also known as Hoya parasitica albomarginata
