Disclaimer: The accompanying photo showcases the vibrant leaf coloration of Hoya sp. (IV from WMZ) when exposed to bright light. Please note that plants may arrive with green leaves; achieving the depicted coloration requires providing appropriate lighting conditions.

Origin and Description:
Hoya sp. (IV from WMZ) is a captivating and rare species with a unique history. The abbreviation "WMZ" stands for Welsh Mountain Zoo, located in Northern Wales, UK, which houses a remarkable 37-acre botanical garden. This Hoya species is distinguished by its large, ovate leaves that exhibit a striking red hue when exposed to strong light. The plant produces delightful, star-shaped flowers approximately 0.5 inches (1.2 cm) in size, emitting a light, pleasant fragrance.

Natural Habitat:
While Hoya sp. (IV from WMZ) does not have a naturally occurring habitat due to its association with the Welsh Mountain Zoo's botanical collection, it thrives in conditions that mimic tropical environments—high humidity, warm temperatures, and bright, indirect light.

Care Instructions:

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Exposure to strong light encourages the development of red leaf coloration; however, avoid direct sunlight to prevent leaf scorch.

  • Watering: Allow the soil to dry out between waterings. Overwatering can damage the roots, so it's essential to ensure the soil is well-draining.

  • Humidity: Requires high humidity levels to thrive. Maintaining humidity above 60% is beneficial.

  • Temperature: Prefers warm temperatures, ideally above 70°F (21°C). Protect it from cold drafts and avoid exposing it to temperatures below this threshold.

  • Soil: A well-draining, airy mix such as orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir is ideal to replicate its natural epiphytic conditions.

Fun Fact:
The Welsh Mountain Zoo, abbreviated as WMZ, boasts a sprawling 37-acre botanical garden that serves as the backdrop for this unique Hoya's discovery.

Care Needs

Bright diffused light

Recreate conditions under a tree canopy, where plants receive lots of light, but it is filtered through the foliage of the trees above. Your light should be bright enough to cast soft shadows.

Low Humidity: Ideally Above 40%

This Hoya tolerates a drier environment. However, it could still benefit from light humidity care, including misting and grouping together with other houseplants. May require humidifier in cooler, drier months.

Intermediate: Lowest 60F

This hoya does not require high heat, but does not tolerate cold as well as other varieties.

Does Sunstress

This plant has evolved to shift color when exposed to bright sunlight, much like a human getting a tan. This does not harm the plant with proper care.
