Hoya sp. (Blang Beke Z3)

Origin and Description:

Hoya ‘Blang Beke Z3’ is an unofficially named Hoya believed to originate from the Aceh region of northern Sumatra, Indonesia. The name “Blang Beke” is associated with a notable mountain peak in Aceh that sits at approximately 2,656 meters (8,714 feet) above sea level. Because of this high elevation, the environment is significantly cooler, wetter, and more overcast compared to the tropical lowlands typically associated with Indonesia.

This Hoya produces pointy, elongated leaves that typically grow narrow and thick. It has a more rugged appearance compared to softer-leaved Hoyas and seems to respond strongly to environmental conditions. In our experience, this plant tends to grow faster during cooler seasons and does not appreciate direct light. Patience is key with this one, as it appears to be a slower-growing Hoya, especially when grown indoors in warmer cabinets or enclosed environments that stay consistently hot.

Natural Habitat:

Based on the origin associated with Blang Beke mountain, this plant likely experiences cooler tropical mountain conditions with frequent cloud cover, fog, heavy humidity, and regular rainfall throughout the year. Temperatures in the region remain relatively mild year-round due to elevation, generally ranging between 62–81°F. The environment is often overcast, suggesting the plant naturally grows under diffused lighting conditions rather than intense direct sun.

Care Instructions:

Here’s what has been working well for us at Unsolicited Plant Talks based on both cultivation experience and the climate conditions associated with its origin:

• Light:
  Bright, indirect light is best. Avoid direct sun, especially harsh afternoon light, as this plant does not seem to appreciate intense exposure. Diffused lighting appears to produce the best results.

• Watering:
  Allow the medium to dry slightly between waterings, but avoid letting it stay dry for extended periods.

• Humidity:
  Appreciates moderate to high humidity and steady airflow. While it can adapt to household humidity, growth tends to improve with increased moisture in the air.

• Temperature:
  Thrives in cooler to intermediate conditions between 62–81°F. We’ve noticed it tends to grow faster during cooler seasons and may slow down significantly in consistently warm indoor cabinets.

• Soil:
  A chunky, airy mix such as coco husk blends works best to maintain healthy roots while allowing good airflow and moisture balance.
