Hoya sangguensis
Origin & Taxonomy
Hoya sangguensis was validly published in 2022 by S. Rahayu & Rodda. Its native range is Borneo (Kalimantan), where it inhabits tropical wet forest biomes.
Description & Features
-
Foliage:
This species shows thick, somewhat coriaceous leaves (occasionally described as “shield-like”) which may carry a bit of texture or subtle sheens, depending on light and age. (Grower listings of H. sangguensis often highlight its robust leaf structure.) -
Flowers / Inflorescences:
The floral structure is classic Hoya with umbels. In published illustrations, the inflorescences are shown from different angles (below, underneath) to emphasize the corona and how it presents. The petals are typically thick, waxy, and triangular in shape, topped by a distinct corona.
Care Guidelines
-
Light:
Bright, indirect light is ideal. Avoid harsh direct sun which may scorch foliage or wash out texture. -
Watering / Moisture:
Allow the top of the growing medium to dry before watering. Because the leaves are somewhat thick, the plant tolerates brief dryness, but persistent sogginess should be avoided. -
Humidity:
Enjoys moderate to high humidity. In drier indoor environments, supplemental humidity can help maintain growth vigor. -
Temperature:
Preferably kept in warm tropical-range conditions (roughly 18–28 °C). Avoid exposing to prolonged lower temperatures. -
Substrate / Medium:
Use a well-draining, airy mix—ideally a combination of bark, perlite, coco husk, or similar materials to allow for root aeration. -
Fertilization:
During active growth phases, a balanced, diluted fertilizer applied periodically may support stronger foliar and floral development.
Considerations & Notes
- Because H. sangguensis is relatively newly described and not yet widely cultivated, variability in leaf form or flower color may occur as clones stabilize in cultivation.
- Some growers highlight that even on the same plant, leaf thickness and surface texture can vary depending on light levels and age.
- The conservation status is not yet broadly reported, but as a species from Borneo, its wild habitat faces pressures from deforestation—making ex-situ cultivation important.
