Hoya micrantha (splash)
Origin and Description:
Hoya micrantha (splash) is native to Southeast Asia, with a distribution from Southern Burma to Northern Thailand and Malaysia. This species is a profuse bloomer, producing clusters of small, dark rose/red flowers with a fuzzy pinkish-green corolla that reflexes backward into a tight ball. While the flowers are not particularly large, they are abundant and can cover a medium-sized plant in full bloom. Hoya micrantha has two distinct leaf forms: one featuring smaller, rough-textured leaves (2.5-3" long), and the other displaying larger, lime-green, oblanceolate leaves (up to 9" long). This particular clone is the smaller one. The leaves are stiff and somewhat pebbly, giving them a card-board-like texture. Both types of foliage may appear on the same plant, making it visually interesting and unique.
Natural Habitat:
Hoya micrantha is an epiphytic twiner that grows several meters long in the wild. It thrives in humid, tropical regions of Southeast Asia, clinging to trees in rainforests. The plant prefers well-draining conditions, much like its natural environment, where it benefits from regular rainfall and bright, indirect light.
Care Instructions:
- Light: Prefers bright, indirect light to maintain the vibrancy of its leaves and encourage prolific blooming.
- Watering: Water thoroughly but allow the soil to dry out between waterings. This plant does well in a fast-draining mix to prevent root rot.
- Humidity: This Hoya prefers high humidity (around 60-80%), making it well-suited for indoor growing in humid conditions or using a humidifier.
- Temperature: Ideal temperatures are between 60°F to 80°F (15°C to 27°C), and it should be protected from drafts and colder temperatures.
- Soil: A well-draining potting mix, such as orchid bark, perlite, and coco husk, is essential for healthy growth.
Fun Fact:
The "splash" pattern on Hoya micrantha leaves is particularly eye-catching, with silver flecks or speckles adding to its visual appeal. Despite its delicate appearance, this plant is known for its resilience and adaptability, thriving in various indoor conditions with minimal fuss
