Hoya ‘Mango Sunset’ (UPT010)

Origin and Description:
Hoya 'Mango Sunset' (UPT010) is a unique cultivar that I personally named through an Instagram poll, where many suggested "Mango" and "Sunset" due to the beautiful color shifts the plant undergoes when sunstressed. I obtained it as a one-of-a-kind seedling from an online marketplace, which came from an open-pollinated Hoya finlaysonii. What’s fascinating is that every seedling from that pod looked distinctly different, which convinced me that this particular one deserved its own name. The leaves are unlike typical Hoya finlaysonii, lacking the recognizable leaf patterns of its parent. The plant grows rapidly, roots easily, and has a resilient nature, making it ideal for both new and experienced Hoya enthusiasts. While the blooms resemble a classic Hoya finlaysonii, the foliage is what truly sets Mango Sunset apart, especially when sunstressed, showcasing vibrant mango and sunset-like hues.

Care Instructions:

  • Light: This cultivar thrives in bright, diffused light. While it can tolerate some direct sunlight, too much will damage the leaves.
  • Watering: Let the soil dry out between waterings to avoid root rot.
  • Humidity: It tolerates household humidity well and doesn’t require extremely high humidity to thrive.
  • Temperature: Ideal temperatures range from 60°F to 80°F (15°C to 27°C), and it should be protected from cold drafts.
  • Soil: Use a well-draining mix, such as orchid bark, perlite, and peat moss, to replicate its natural epiphytic growing conditions.

Fun Fact 1:
I shared a photo of Hoya 'Mango Sunset' on our Instagram a while back, and after a community poll, the name was born. Many people suggested "Mango" and "Sunset" due to the plant's vivid coloration when sunstressed. You can check out the post on our Instagram here.

Fun Fact 2:
This plant is incredibly resilient. I once underwatered my mother plant to the point where it looked like it was dying—leaves were limp, scorched, and barely hanging on. After one deep watering, it bounced back the very next day as if nothing had happened, proving just how tough this cultivar can be!
