Origin and Description:
Hoya lyi was first discovered by botanist Alfred Rehder in 1913, during his explorations in China. This rare species, found in Southern China, Laos, and Vietnam, is a lithophyte, meaning it naturally grows on limestone rocks in shaded areas. Over the years, multiple clones of Hoya lyi have circulated among collectors, each showing slightly different characteristics. However, this particular clone is often regarded as one of the most visually stunning, with its long, pointed leaves that can vary from oval to oblong in shape, covered in a soft, velvety texture. The plant produces clusters of small, star-shaped flowers, typically creamy-white with a hint of pink in the center, which emit a sweet fragrance.

Natural Habitat:
In its natural habitat, Hoya lyi clings to limestone rock surfaces in shaded, tropical environments. The plant thrives in areas with moderate humidity and warm temperatures, often growing in forested regions under the protection of tree canopies.

Care Instructions:

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light, much like the filtered light it would receive in its natural environment. Avoid direct sunlight.
  • Watering: Let the soil dry between waterings, as the plant prefers a well-draining medium to prevent root rot.
  • Humidity: While it tolerates average household humidity levels, it thrives in moderate to high humidity (40-60%).
  • Temperature: It is adaptable to a range of temperatures, performing best between 50-85°F (10-29°C).
  • Soil: Use a well-draining mix, such as orchid bark or coco coir, to replicate its natural lithophytic growing conditions on limestone.

Fun Fact:
The variety of Hoya lyi clones in circulation makes this plant an intriguing addition for collectors. This particular clone is known for being the most attractive, with its velvety-textured leaves and beautiful, fragrant flowers. Its discovery by Alfred Rehder over a century ago adds to its historical and botanical significance

This Hoya tolerates a drier environment. However, it could still benefit from light humidity care, including misting and grouping together with other houseplants. May require humidifier in cooler, drier months.

Cold Tolerant: Lowest 50F/10C

This hoya will tolerate cooler conditions than most.

Does Not Sunstress

This plant will not change color under bright light.
