Hoya latifolia ‘Wasabi’
Origin and Description:
Hoya latifolia was first described in 1826 by Carl Ludwig Blume from plants native to Southeast Asia, including regions of Indonesia and Malaysia. Hoya latifolia ‘Wasabi’ is a cultivated selection known for its unique foliage and coloration.
In our experience, the leaves are not as thick as typical Hoya latifolia. This form features broad foliage with green-on-green variegation that shows up as subtle tonal layering across the leaf surface rather than bold contrast. As the plant matures, the leaves size up nicely while maintaining that softer, blended variegation that makes this one stand out.
Natural Habitat:
In its natural environment, Hoya latifolia grows as an epiphyte in tropical forests, climbing along trees where it receives bright, filtered light, high humidity, and consistent airflow.
Care Instructions:
-
Light:
Bright, indirect light is ideal. Can tolerate some gentle direct light, which may enhance the visibility of its green-on-green variegation. -
Watering:
Allow the medium to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid keeping it constantly wet. -
Humidity:
Prefers higher humidity since the leaves are not as thick as typical latifolia, but can still adapt and grow well in ambient conditions with proper care. -
Temperature:
Thrives between 65–85°F. Keep away from cold drafts. -
Soil:
Use a chunky, well-draining mix such as coco husk blends to support healthy root systems.
Fun Fact:
Although we couldn’t find exactly who gave it the name ‘Wasabi’, it was named after the green-on-green variegation that resembles the color of the culinary wasabi plant.
