Hoya latifolia (silver)

Origin and Description:

Hoya latifolia was first described in 1826 by Carl Ludwig Blume and is widely distributed across Southeast Asia. In cultivation, there are multiple forms of Hoya latifolia, each with its own distinct traits. This particular form, Hoya latifolia (silver), is known to be the silver counterpart of Hoya latifolia (Sarawak).

It features broad, rounded leaves with a soft silver overlay that gives the foliage a muted, almost frosted appearance. Like Hoya latifolia (Sarawak), it can develop that signature “bouncy” look under the right conditions. However, this form can behave quite differently depending on how it’s grown. In brighter and hotter environments, the leaves tend to grow smaller and significantly thicker, losing that soft, bouncy appearance. If you’re after those big, beautiful silver leaves, growing it under slightly lower light will help encourage larger, flatter foliage with that desirable texture.

Natural Habitat:

In the wild, Hoya latifolia grows as an epiphyte in tropical forests, climbing trees where it receives filtered light, high humidity, and consistent airflow.

Care Instructions:

• Light:
  Prefers bright, indirect light. For larger, flatter, and more silver-toned leaves, slightly lower light conditions are ideal. Higher light and heat will result in smaller, thicker leaves.

• Watering:
  Allow the medium to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid prolonged soggy conditions.

• Humidity:
  Prefers moderate to high humidity, but adapts well to ambient conditions.

• Temperature:
  Thrives between 65–85°F. Warmer environments will influence leaf thickness and size.

• Soil:
  A chunky, well-draining mix such as coco husk blends works best for healthy root development.
