Hoya lacunosa ‘Gothic’ (Mentawai)

Hoya lacunosa ‘Gothic’ (Mentawai)

Origin and Description:

Hoya lacunosa is a beloved species of Hoya, native to Southeast Asia, particularly Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. Known for its compact growth habit, Hoya lacunosa features small, ovate leaves with a slightly dimpled or “lacunose” texture, giving the plant its name. The leaves are dark green and grow densely along thin vines. What makes Hoya lacunosa stand out is its prolific blooming habit, producing clusters of small, star-shaped, highly fragrant white flowers. The scent is often described as a mix of cinnamon and vanilla, making it a favorite among collectors.

The Mentawai Islands, located off the western coast of Sumatra, Indonesia, are home to a unique form of Hoya lacunosa. This variety is characterized by slightly elongated leaves compared to other types of Hoya lacunosa and distinctive black stems. The flowers are white, similar to those of Hoya lacunosa sp. Aceh, but are smaller in size. This rare Hoya is categorized as extinct in its natural habitat.

Natural Habitat:

In the wild, Hoya lacunosa grows as an epiphyte in tropical rainforests, attaching itself to trees and thriving in warm, humid environments with plenty of shade and filtered light. The natural conditions provide consistent moisture, which supports its vigorous growth and frequent blooming.

Care Instructions:

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. It can tolerate lower light conditions, though it may reduce blooming. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
  • Watering: Water thoroughly but allow the top layer of soil to dry out between waterings. Avoid overwatering, as this can lead to root rot.
  • Humidity: Hoya lacunosa enjoys high humidity (60-80%), similar to its natural rainforest habitat.
  • Temperature: Thrives in temperatures between 65-85°F (18-29°C). Protect it from cold drafts and temperatures below 50°F.
  • Soil: Use a well-draining, airy mix such as orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir to replicate its natural growing conditions as an epiphyte.

Fun Fact:

Hoya lacunosa is one of the most fragrant species of Hoya, often blooming year-round if grown in optimal conditions. The strong vanilla-cinnamon scent of its flowers makes it an incredibly popular choice for indoor growers. Additionally, Hoya lacunosa is known to be an easy-to-care-for species, making it a great choice for beginners and experienced collectors alike.
