Hoya lacunosa ‘Bruno’ (Red)
Please note: These are grown in a 1oz plastic cup in pure coir.
Origin and Description:
Hoya lacunosa ‘Bruno’ (Red) is a unique mutation that originated from Hoya lacunosa ‘Bruno’ at Fendi Hoya Nursery in Indonesia. We personally picked this clone up during our Indonesia trip in early 2026. At the time, the grower mentioned that he was still cultivating and observing the plant to determine how stable the mutation would be over time, but entrusted us to continue growing and testing it in our own environment.
After months of growing it here in the Unsolicited Plant Talks greenhouses, the plant has continued to consistently produce deep dark red foliage without needing supplemental grow lights or excessively bright growing conditions. This gives it a very different appearance compared to the typical green foliage associated with most lacunosa forms.
The leaves remain compact and elegant like traditional Hoya lacunosa, but the rich red coloration gives the plant an almost unreal look, especially as the vines mature and cascade.
Natural Habitat:
The original Hoya lacunosa species is native to Southeast Asia, where it grows epiphytically in warm, humid forests with filtered light and good airflow.
Care Instructions:
The care for this plant is similar to other Hoya lacunosa varieties:
-
Light:
Bright, indirect light is ideal. Unlike many red-colored Hoyas, this clone has continued to maintain its dark coloration for us without needing intense lighting. -
Watering:
Allow the medium to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid prolonged soggy conditions. -
Humidity:
Appreciates moderate to high humidity, though it adapts well to household ambient conditions. -
Temperature:
Thrives between 65–85°F with steady warmth and airflow. -
Soil:
Does well in airy, well-draining mixes. These particular plants are currently grown in pure coir.
Fun Fact:
Many Hoyas only develop red coloration as a temporary stress response under very bright light, but this mutation has continued producing dark red foliage in our greenhouses even without supplemental lighting, making it especially exciting to grow and observe.
