Hoya indaysarae
Origin and Description: Hoya indaysarae is a recently discovered species of wax plant endemic to the Philippines, specifically Central Dinagat Island. Identified on April 23, 2017, this vining epiphyte was found growing on an old Diospyros blancoi (kamagong) tree near a river, at approximately 100 meters above sea level.
The plant features smooth, green leaves with entire margins, rounded bases, and pointed tips. Its flowers are arranged in umbels of 5 to 13, each about 1.2 to 1.4 cm in diameter. The corolla is creamy yellow with pinkish tips, and the inner surface is pubescent, giving it a delicate, fuzzy appearance.
Natural Habitat: In its natural habitat, Hoya indaysarae thrives as an epiphyte in humid, tropical forests. It prefers growing on mature trees near water sources, benefiting from the consistent moisture and dappled sunlight typical of such environments.
Care Instructions:
-
Light: Provide bright, indirect light to mimic its natural, filtered sunlight. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
-
Watering: Maintain consistent moisture by watering when the top inch of the soil feels dry. Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot.
-
Humidity: High humidity levels (60-80%) are ideal, reflecting its tropical origins. Consider using a humidity tray or room humidifier if growing indoors.
-
Temperature: Prefers warm temperatures between 65-85°F (18-29°C). Protect from temperatures below 50°F (10°C).
-
Soil: Use a well-draining, airy mix such as orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir to replicate its epiphytic growing conditions.
Fun Fact: Hoya indaysarae was named in honor of Sara Duterte-Carpio, then-Mayor of Davao City and daughter of the 16th President of the Philippines, Rodrigo Duterte. The naming recognizes her support for environmental conservation initiatives in the Caraga Region.
