Hoya griffithii (yellow)

Origin and Description:
Hoya aff. griffithii (Yellow Clone) is a distinct variety of Hoya griffithii, first described by Joseph Dalton Hooker in 1883 in Flora of British India. This clone is notable for its beautiful, pale yellow flowers with a soft cream center, which contrast nicely against the darker green foliage. Unlike the typical creamy white flowers of other clones, this yellow-toned version offers a unique color variation, making it a favorite among collectors.

Natural Habitat:
This clone originates from the subtropical rainforests of Yunnan, China, where it thrives in humid, shaded conditions, growing as an epiphyte on trees. These environmental factors contribute to its unique coloration and adaptability.

Care Instructions:

  • Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal. Too much direct sunlight can damage the leaves, but adequate light helps maintain the vibrant color of the flowers.
  • Watering: Water when the top inch of soil dries out. Ensure proper drainage to avoid root rot.
  • Humidity: Thrives in high humidity (65-85%), but I have successfully grown it in household humidity levels (40-50%) without any issues.
  • Temperature: Best suited for temperatures between 60°F to 85°F (15°C to 29°C). Avoid cold drafts and sudden temperature drops.
  • Soil: A well-draining mix of perlite, orchid bark, and coco husk mimics its natural epiphytic environment.

Fun Fact:
The yellow clone of Hoya griffithii is particularly sought after due to its rare flower color. While most griffithii clones feature creamy white flowers, this variation offers a subtle yet stunning yellow hue, making it a true standout in any collection. The soft tones of its blooms, as seen in the image you provided, add an extra layer of beauty to its already charming appearance.
