Hoya ‘Dragon Claw’ (Aceh)

Hoya ‘Dragon Claw’ (Aceh)

Origin and Description:

Hoya ‘Dragon Claw’ (Aceh) is a cultivated Hoya that we personally picked up during our Indonesia trip in early 2026. With so many new Hoya varieties appearing over the past few years, one of April’s main goals has been building a carefully curated collection of plants that genuinely stand out, not just by name, but by appearance, growth habit, species significance, or story.

If you know UPT, you know we don’t collect plants simply for the sake of names, though many collectors do. We focus heavily on interesting-looking Hoyas, pure species, and plants with something special about them. This one immediately stood out to us because of how uniquely narrow the leaves become when grown in warmer and brighter environments.

The foliage stays impressively skinny and elongated, especially under higher light and warmth, though lower light can produce slightly wider and darker leaves while still maintaining that slender overall shape. One of the coolest features is how the leaves subtly curl toward the tips, creating an appearance reminiscent of claws, which we believe is exactly why the cultivator gave it the name ‘Dragon Claw’.

Its overall look gives off a sleek, almost aggressive appearance compared to broader-leaved Hoyas, making it a standout addition in a collection full of more common foliage types.

Natural Habitat:

While little documented information exists for this cultivated form, the “Aceh” designation suggests origins tied to the Aceh region of northern Sumatra, Indonesia, where tropical forests provide warm temperatures, filtered light, high humidity, and excellent airflow for epiphytic Hoyas.

Care Instructions:

  • Light:
Bright, indirect light is ideal. Warmer temperatures and stronger lighting help encourage the skinny leaf shape seen in the stock photo. Lower light may result in slightly wider and darker foliage.

  • Watering:
Allow the medium to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid prolonged soggy conditions.

  • Humidity:
Appreciates moderate to high humidity, though it adapts well to ambient greenhouse conditions with proper airflow.

  • Temperature:
Thrives in warm temperatures between 65–85°F. Warmer conditions seem to encourage the narrowest foliage form.

  • Soil:
A chunky, airy mix such as coco husk blends works best to support healthy roots and consistent growth.
