Hoya cummingiana (outer variegated)
Disclaimer:
Please note that the variegation pattern and leaf size of Hoya cummingiana (outer variegated)Â can vary. The plant you receive may not exactly match the stock photo, as variegation can be more or less pronounced depending on environmental conditions.
Origin and Description:
Hoya cummingiana is a native species from the Philippines, Borneo, and Java. It was first described in a botanical reference in 1844, making it one of the earlier documented hoyas. This specific outer variegated clone is known for its beautiful white or creamy variegation along the edges of its small, ovate, succulent leaves. Often called a "bush hoya" because it grows upright and shrubby rather than as a vine. Once the stems get long enough, Hoya cummingiana (outer variegated) will start to cascade and trail, making it a beautiful hanging plant option.
Natural Habitat:
In its natural environment, Hoya cummingiana grows as a terrestrial (or bush) plant, often found along the forest floor in humid, tropical forests. It's even been found growing on limestone cliffs in places like Luzon and Palawan, Phillipines.Â
Care Instructions:
- Light: Hoya cummingiana (outer variegated) prefers bright, indirect light. Higher light gives the white margin a beautiful blush pink hue. Avoid direct afternoon sunlight to prevent leaf scorch.
- Watering: Water Hoya cummingiana (outer variegated) when the substrate is mostly dried out. Since the leaves are thicker/more succulent, it is more forgiving with drying out. Avoid overwatering to prevent root rot.
- Humidity: Hoya cummingiana (outer variegated) performs best in moderate humidity, ideally around 50-60%. It can adapt to most ambient environments, making it an excellent addition to your home!
- Temperature: Keep Hoya cummingiana (outer variegated) in temperatures between 65°F and 85°F (18°C to 29°C). It does not tolerate cold conditions well.
- Soil: Use a lightweight, well-draining mix. A blend of orchid bark, perlite, and coco husk provides good aeration and keeps water from pooling around the roots. Repot every 1 to 2 years, or when the mix starts to break down, to refresh the soil and support healthy growth.
Fun Fact:
Hoya cummingiana was named after Hugh Cuming, a British naturalist and collector who extensively explored the Phillippines and surrounding regions, contributing significantly to the botanical knowledge of the area. This plant is not only admired for its stunning variegation but also for its resilience and ease of care, making it a great choice for both beginners and experienced plant enthusiasts.
