Hoya clemensiorum ‘Minigator’

Origin and Description:

Hoya clemensiorum was first described in 1981 by botanist Dale Kloppenburg, based on plants native to Borneo. This particular form, Hoya clemensiorum ‘Minigator’, is a cultivated selection from Indonesia, where growers observed a naturally smaller-growing variant and gave it a distinguishing name to separate it from other forms in circulation.

Hoya clemensiorum ‘Minigator’ is especially loved for its bold, textured foliage. Unlike the typical big and wider leaves of the species, this version consistently produces more compact, miniature leaves while still retaining that signature deeply veined, almost armored look. The thick, reptilian texture paired with its reduced size gives it a striking and collectible appearance that stands out in any Hoya collection.

Natural Habitat:

In its natural environment, Hoya clemensiorum is found in the tropical rainforests of Borneo, growing as an epiphyte along tree trunks and branches. It thrives in warm, humid conditions with filtered light, where airflow and consistent moisture play a big role in its growth habit.

Care Instructions:

• Light:
  Bright, indirect light. Can tolerate some gentle direct light, but avoid harsh midday sun to prevent leaf burn.
• Watering:
  Allow the medium to dry slightly between waterings. Do not let it stay soggy for extended periods.
• Humidity:
  Prefers higher humidity for optimal growth, but thanks to its thick, leathery leaves, it’s quite forgiving and can adapt well to typical ambient conditions.
  
• Temperature:
  Thrives in warm conditions between 65–85°F. Avoid sudden temperature drops.
• Soil:
  A chunky, well-draining mix is ideal. Coco husk-based mixes work great, providing both aeration and moisture retention.

Fun Fact:

The name ‘Minigator’ comes from its resemblance to the textured back of an alligator, paired with its smaller, more compact leaf size. “Mini” + “gator” = one very fitting name for this unique clone.
