Hoya clemensiorum ‘Dragon Back’
Please note: While Hoya clemensiorum ‘Dragon Back’ is known for its shorter, rounder leaves, occasional leaves may still grow longer and resemble typical clemensiorum. Most growth, however, trends toward that compact, rounded form.
Origin and Description:
Hoya clemensiorum was first described in 1981 by botanist Dale Kloppenburg from specimens native to Borneo. Hoya clemensiorum ‘Dragon Back’ is a cultivated form selected for its distinct leaf shape and texture.
This variety stands out by producing shorter, broader, and more rounded leaves compared to the typical long and narrow form of the species. The foliage retains the iconic deeply impressed venation that clemensiorum is known for, giving it that bold, almost armored appearance. The combination of its compact shape and dramatic texture makes this form especially eye-catching and highly collectible.
Natural Habitat:
In its native habitat, Hoya clemensiorum grows as an epiphyte in the tropical rainforests of Borneo. It climbs along tree trunks and branches where it receives filtered light, high humidity, and steady airflow.
Care Instructions:
-
Light:
Bright, indirect light. Can handle some gentle direct light, but avoid intense midday sun. -
Watering:
Allow the medium to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid prolonged soggy conditions. -
Humidity:
Prefers higher humidity, but adapts well to ambient conditions thanks to its thick, sturdy leaves. -
Temperature:
Thrives between 65–85°F. Keep away from cold drafts or sudden drops in temperature. -
Soil:
A chunky, well-draining mix is ideal. Coco husk-based blends work great for airflow and moisture balance.
Fun Fact:
The name ‘Dragon Back’ comes from its textured, ridged foliage that resembles the back of a dragon, giving it a bold and almost mythical look in any collection.
