Hoya finlaysonii (black)

Hoya finlaysonii (black)

Origin and Description:

Hoya callistophylla was first described in 2001 by botanist Dale Kloppenburg, with its origins traced to Borneo, particularly Sabah in Malaysia. This species is well known for its thick, elongated leaves with bold, dark venation that contrasts beautifully against a lighter green background.

This specific clone, referred to as the “black” form, stands out even further. It tends to grow massive, wavy leaves with a pillowy, almost inflated texture. What really sets it apart is the darker pigmentation, the stems and even the underside veins of the leaves often develop a deep, almost black tone. Compared to standard Hoya callistophylla, this clone has a heavier presence, both in size and overall character, giving it a much more dramatic and sculptural look.

Natural Habitat:

In the wild, Hoya callistophylla grows as an epiphyte in tropical rainforests of Borneo. It thrives in humid, shaded environments where it climbs along trees and receives filtered light through the canopy.

Care Instructions:

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Strong light helps maintain compact growth and enhances the contrast in venation, but avoid harsh direct sun that can scorch leaves.
  • Watering: Allow the medium to dry slightly between waterings. This species prefers consistent moisture but should never sit in soggy conditions.
  • Humidity: Thrives in moderate to high humidity (60–80%), though it can adapt to household conditions with proper watering balance.
  • Temperature: Ideal range is 65°F to 85°F (18°C to 29°C). Avoid cold drafts and temperatures below 55°F.
  • Soil: Use a chunky, well-draining mix such as orchid bark, coco husk, and perlite to mimic its epiphytic roots.
  • Fertilizer: Feed regularly during the growing season with a balanced fertilizer to encourage leaf size and overall vigor.

Fun Fact:

While Hoya callistophylla is already considered a statement plant, this “black” clone takes it a step further. The combination of oversized, pillowy leaves and darkened stems and veins gives it a completely different personality compared to typical forms. It’s not the easiest clone to come across, and its bold, almost moody look makes it a must-have for serious Hoya collectors.
