Origin and Description:

Hoya AH1011 is a stunning cultivar that hails from AH Hoya Nursery in Thailand and, despite its unknown parentage, is undeniably coveted in the hoya community. In higher light, Hoya AH1011 sunstresses a beautiful red and develops a dark margin around the leaves, making it a remarkably desirable showpiece. This plant grows rapidly in proper conditions and is capable of withstanding drought. The blooms of Hoya AH1011 present with a beautiful pink corona against a pink corolla and are a sight to behold, making it an essential addition to any indoor garden.

Natural Habitat: While its parentage is unknown, the parents of Hoya AH1011 likely hail from the tropical forests southeast Asia, where it thrives as an epiphyte (tree climber). This means it generally grows in a humid, shaded environment, but loves the bright sun as well. Since it loves to climb trees, give it a trellis for maximum growing potential!

Care Instructions:

  • Light: Hoya AH1011 prefers bright light. Its leaves will turn a deep red with a dark margin when exposed to higher levels of sunlight or a higher wattage grow light. For best results, provide plenty of bright light to maintain healthy growth and to encourage blooming.
  • Watering: Water thoroughly when the top inch of soil is dry to the touch. Be sure to allow the water to drain completely, as standing water can cause root rot. Overwatering is a common issue, so it is important to let the soil dry out between waterings.
  • Humidity: Hoya AH1011 thrives in lower humidity levels, ideally above 40%, though it will still do fine in medium humidity as well. This makes it a great option for any ambient spot in your home - just don't forget the bright light!
  • Temperature: This plant prefers higher temps, above 70 degrees. It does not tolerate cold well, so protect it from drafts and temperatures below 50°F.
  • Soil: Use a lightweight, well-draining potting mix for Hoya AH1011. A blend of orchid bark, perlite, and coco husk is ideal for providing aeration while preventing water from pooling at the roots. Repot the plant every 1-2 years to refresh the soil and encourage healthy growth.
  • Fertilizer: During the growing season, feed Hoya AH1011 with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength once a month. This will help promote strong growth and blooming. Reduce fertilization during the fall and winter months when the plant's growth slows down.

Fun Fact: AH Hoya Nursery does not share the parent plants of its cultivars, making the origins of each of their beautiful plants a bit of a mystery. Despite the mystery surrounding its parentage, Hoya AH1011 is a showstopper to add to your collection!

Care Needs

Bright Light

No barrier between the plant and the light source. Ex: Directly under a grow light, in a sunny window with no curtains or trees.

Low Humidity: Ideally Above 40%

This Hoya tolerates a drier environment. However, it could still benefit from light humidity care, including misting and grouping together with other houseplants. May require humidifier in cooler, drier months.

Loves Heat: Lowest 70F/21C

This hoya does not do well in cold conditions, so be sure to keep in a greenhouse or other temperature controlled space.

Does Sunstress

This plant has evolved to shift color when exposed to bright sunlight, much like a human getting a tan. This does not harm the plant with proper care.
