10 SEEDS - Hoya ‘Maliksi’ (UPT001) x Hoya ‘Mayumi’ (UPT002)
Shipping Information
Every seed order includes FREE UPS GROUND shipping.
If you’d like additional shipment security and faster transit times, a FedEx upgrade is available during checkout.
Please note that lost seed shipments sent via UPS are not covered. Hoya seeds are living material and remain viable for only a limited period of time. While we carefully package and ship fresh seed, we cannot guarantee germination on seed packets that experience shipping delays, extended transit times, or are lost in the mail. If shipping speed and security are important to you, we highly recommend selecting the FedEx upgrade.
This cross is a little extra special to me.
Hoya ‘Maliksi’ (UPT001) was chosen as the seed parent, while Hoya ‘Mayumi’ (UPT002) was selected as the pollen father. Both plants are named after two of our dogs, Maliksi (our Japanese Akita) and Mayumi (our Shiba Inu). When they had puppies, I thought it would be fun to create Hoya hybrids named after them too. This cross is the beginning of that journey.
Interestingly, my original plan was actually the opposite. I first attempted to use Hoya ‘Mayumi’ as the mother plant, but the pairing simply wasn’t compatible. After several unsuccessful attempts, I reversed the cross and used Hoya ‘Maliksi’ as the pod parent instead. Thankfully, that combination worked, and we were rewarded with this seed pod.
What makes this pairing even more exciting is that both Hoya ‘Maliksi’ and Hoya ‘Mayumi’ were originally grown from open-pollinated seed. Hoya ‘Maliksi’ came from a Hoya patcharawalai 023 seed pod, while Hoya ‘Mayumi’ came from a Hoya ‘Noelle’ seed pod. Because their pollen parents were unknown, each plant expressed its own unique combination of genetics. From those seedlings, I hand-selected my favorite individual from each pod to become Hoya ‘Maliksi’ and Hoya ‘Mayumi’.
Now, for the first time, those two selected plants have been intentionally crossed with one another.
While no specific trait can ever be guaranteed, this cross has the potential for an incredible amount of variation. Not only is every seedling genetically unique, but both parents are themselves unique selections that originated from open-pollinated seed. In a way, you’re growing the next generation from two already hand-selected surprises. That means these seedlings have an even broader pool of genetics to draw from, making every sprout an exciting surprise.
One of the most rewarding things about growing Hoya from seed is watching those differences unfold. Even seeds from the same pod can grow into noticeably different plants. Some may resemble Hoya ‘Maliksi’, others Hoya ‘Mayumi’, and some may surprise us with combinations we never expected.
Every seedling is a brand-new plant that has never existed before.
Open Pollinated vs. Hand Pollinated
Open Pollinated Seeds
Open-pollinated seeds have an unknown pollen donor. While we know the seed parent, we don’t know which nearby plant contributed the pollen. This creates an element of mystery and often results in exciting surprises.
Hand Pollinated Seeds
Hand-pollinated seeds have both parents intentionally selected and documented. The goal is not to create exact copies of the parents, but to increase the likelihood that desirable traits may appear in the offspring.
Neither method is better than the other. Open-pollinated seeds offer mystery and discovery, while hand-pollinated seeds provide a more intentional breeding direction. Both can produce extraordinary plants.
What If You Grow Something Phenomenal?
One of my favorite things about releasing seed is knowing that the next incredible Hoya might not be discovered in our greenhouse. It might be discovered in yours.
If one of your seedlings grows into something truly special, here’s what I recommend:
1. Add Your Own Accession Number
Take the UPT accession number assigned to this cross and add your own identifier to the end.
For example:
UPT2604-AM01
Many growers use their initials followed by a numbering system.
This creates a permanent record showing that you were the grower who selected and developed that particular seedling. If it is ever shared, traded, propagated, or sold in the future, others can trace its history back to you.
2. Give It a Name
Found something unique? Give it a name!
For example:
Hoya ‘Venice’ (UPT2604-AM01)
Single quotation marks should be used for cultivars.
3. Share It With Us! (Optional)
We would absolutely love to see what you grow.
If one of your seedlings develops into something extraordinary, send us a photo! We’d be honored to feature it on our page and give proper credit to you as the grower.
After all, one of the best parts of this hobby is celebrating each other’s successes. We get excited seeing what comes out of these crosses, and we’d love the opportunity to be excited right alongside you.
