Origin and Discovery: Hoya undulata was first described in 2015 by researchers S. Rahayu and M. Rodda. This fascinating species is endemic to Borneo, specifically the Kalimantan region of Indonesia. It thrives in the lowland heath forests at about 350 meters above sea level. The species is named for its characteristic undulate (wavy) leaf margins.

Natural Habitat: Hoya undulata is found in the humid, tropical environments of Borneo. It is an epiphytic plant, meaning it naturally grows on other plants, such as trees, benefiting from the moist and shaded conditions of its forest habitat. The species is adapted to form domatia, specialized structures in its leaves that provide a habitat for ants, a unique feature seen in only a few Hoya species like Hoya mitrata and Hoya darwinii.

Description:

  • Leaves: The leaves of Hoya undulata are rigid, lance-shaped, and can vary in color from olive green to deep burgundy depending on light exposure. They are characterized by their wavy margins and can also exhibit pink variegation.
  • Flowers: The corona of Hoya undulata is unique among Bornean Hoya species, with its lobes developing two lateral hooked appendages.

Care Instructions:

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. In brighter conditions, the leaves can turn a deeper burgundy, adding to its visual appeal.
  • Watering: Allow the soil to dry out slightly between waterings to avoid root rot.
  • Humidity: Thrives in high humidity environments. Regular misting or using a humidity tray can help maintain adequate moisture levels.
  • Temperature: Best kept in temperatures above 75°F (24°C). It is highly sensitive to cold and should be protected from sudden temperature drops.
  • Soil: Requires well-draining soil to prevent overwatering issues.

Fun Fact: The domatia formed by Hoya undulata's leaves are looser compared to those of Hoya mitrata or Hoya darwinii, and they provide a habitat for ants, which is a fascinating adaptation seen in this species.

NOTE -

Those who have attempted to import this item previously are well aware of its delicate nature. Not only are these plants hard to find, but ensuring they survive shipping can be a challenge. However, rest assured that these specimens are well-rooted. I strongly recommend repotting them only when you observe the roots emerging from the bottom of their container, as they are prone to stress and can wilt easily. Purchase them only if you're up for the challenge, for these unique plants can become a proud addition to your collection!

Care Needs

Bright diffused light

Recreate conditions under a tree canopy, where plants receive lots of light, but it is filtered through the foliage of the trees above. Your light should be bright enough to cast soft shadows.

Low Humidity: Ideally Above 40%

This Hoya tolerates a drier environment. However, it could still benefit from light humidity care, including misting and grouping together with other houseplants. May require humidifier in cooler, drier months.

Intermediate: Lowest 60F

This hoya does not require high heat, but does not tolerate cold as well as other varieties.

Does Sunstress

This plant has evolved to shift color when exposed to bright sunlight, much like a human getting a tan. This does not harm the plant with proper care.
