Both plants are named after two of our dogs, Maliksi (our Japanese Akita) and Mayumi (our Shiba Inu). When they had puppies, I thought it would be fun to create Hoya hybrids named after them too. This cross is the beginning of that journey.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eInterestingly, my original plan was actually the opposite. I first attempted to use \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003cem\u003eHoya\u003c\/em\u003e ‘Mayumi’\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e as the mother plant, but the pairing simply wasn’t compatible. After several unsuccessful attempts, I reversed the cross and used \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003cem\u003eHoya\u003c\/em\u003e ‘Maliksi’\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e as the pod parent instead. Thankfully, that combination worked, and we were rewarded with these seed pods.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eWhat makes this pairing even more exciting is that both \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003cem\u003eHoya\u003c\/em\u003e ‘Maliksi’\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e and \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003cem\u003eHoya\u003c\/em\u003e ‘Mayumi’\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e were originally grown from open-pollinated seed. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003cem\u003eHoya\u003c\/em\u003e ‘Maliksi’\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e came from a \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003cem\u003eHoya\u003c\/em\u003e patcharawalai 023\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e seed pod, while \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003cem\u003eHoya\u003c\/em\u003e ‘Mayumi’\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e came from a \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003cem\u003eHoya\u003c\/em\u003e ‘Noelle’\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e seed pod. Because their pollen parents were unknown, each plant expressed its own unique combination of genetics. From those seedlings, I hand-selected my favorite individual from each pod to become \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003cem\u003eHoya\u003c\/em\u003e ‘Maliksi’\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e and \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003cem\u003eHoya\u003c\/em\u003e ‘Mayumi’\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eNow, for the first time, those two selected plants have been intentionally crossed with one another.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eWhile no specific trait can ever be guaranteed, this cross has the potential for an incredible amount of variation. Not only is every seedling genetically unique, but both parents are themselves unique selections that originated from open-pollinated seed. In a way, you’re growing the next generation from two already hand-selected surprises. That means these seedlings have an even broader pool of genetics to draw from, making every sprout an exciting surprise.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eOne of the most rewarding things about growing \u003cem\u003eHoya\u003c\/em\u003e from seed is watching those differences unfold. Even seeds from the same pod can grow into noticeably different plants. While we know the seed parent, we don’t know which nearby plant contributed the pollen. This creates an element of mystery and often results in exciting surprises.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003e\u003cspan\u003eHand Pollinated Seeds\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eHand-pollinated seeds have both parents intentionally selected and documented. The goal is not to create exact copies of the parents, but to increase the likelihood that desirable traits may appear in the offspring.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eNeither method is better than the other. Open-pollinated seeds offer mystery and discovery, while hand-pollinated seeds provide a more intentional breeding direction.
